Daisy

Daisy uses her beauty to cover her true self. “he found what a grotesque thing a rose is and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grass.” This quote is a metaphor in which daisy is the rose, and she covers her cruel true self with beauty and innocence.

Gatsby

Gatsby builds his own caricature through fabricated stories and spreading rumors  about himself. Gatsby is in my opinion the character that most uses illusion. After all Gatsby is prepared to throw huge parties in hope of daisy once coming in as well as building a false identity. Gatsby’s illusion is so strong that in the mind of the reader and the rich of both east and west egg see him as mythical almost more than human because no one truly “knows” him. He loses some of this when he introduces himself to Nick when you realize Gatsby is a man like any other.

Nick

I believe nick stays rather true to himself throughout the whole book and therefore did not have to use illusion. Nick has nothing to hide and only tries to understand this new world he finds himself in.

  1. Hi Gary,

I am really glad to see you have begun to put your work on your blog.

You make some valid points above. I would like to see you develop them further as your explanations are very brief at the moment.

I would also disagree with you on your comments about Nick. In the book, he states to us that “When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart.”

A person does not make a statement like this if they have been “unchanged” by the events around them. Please consider this in your answer.
