Dystopias are effective texts as they issue a warning to the reader. A disturbing atmosphere is the most effective “Show not tell” way of establishing the text is dystopian.

“… a spiral of gritty dust, entering behind him.” As Winston enters the Victory Mansions, he is followed by this gritty dust, first evoking disgust in the reader but also foreshadowing themes of surveillance by personifying this gritty dust. Not much further we are introduced to the Telescreen, set in Winston’s apartment and workplace. “It was conceivable they watched everybody, all the time.” This constant surveillance and fear of being discovered by the thought police sets up an oppressive , disturbing atmosphere.
